A seed sowed.
Grand Canyon 2016, the most intimidating thing I had seen and most probably will ever see. Stood before me Mother Nature at is most beautiful, the moment I look back on to further pursue exploration of the great outdoors. But before exploring future areas of interest I would have to get fit and experience the hard terrains nature offers on foot.
May 2017 my first challenge, 60km (37 odd miles) of solid hill walking up in the beautiful South Downs under the fantastic event organisers Just Walk. A rookie completion time of 16 hours hiking up hills, through woodland and marshes on miles and miles on mainly those lovely, uneven flint paths. Black toe nails followed as well as blisters on blisters on blisters and I was to crab walk up and down stairs for at least a week to follow. Pat on back – well done.
After a modest time of recovery I was egger to hit the hills again. Next was the more sensible task of taking on the Seven Sisters. During which I found myself behind a fellow hiker with #Walk1000Miles imprinted on her apparel. What was this? Soon I was to find out!
Turns out Country Walk have set up a free challenge to all found at http://www.walk1000miles.co.uk
And it’s simple. Task yourself to walk a total of 1000 miles in 2018…the perfect blueprint and milestone to reach…to marry up with my new found enthusiasm to explore the outdoors.
I have already re-signed up to the 37 mile gruelling up The South Downs as well as a 28 mile (45km) venture up the Welsh mountains of Snowdonia in 2018. So I make that just another 945 miles to plan… ha. I hope to complete a very ambitious checklist to crunch these miles down, including:
The entire 100mile South Downs Way route.
A revisit of The Seven Sisters
The New Forest
The highest peaks of England, Wales and Scotland – Scafell Pike, Mt. Snowdon and Ben Nevis.
The West Highland Way, Scotland.
The Isle of Skye.
And fill the gaps in with a lot of coastal walks to and from work.
Pretty mad right 😀
The idea of this blog is to record my ventures and experiences, publish photographs although I’m sure the bulk will go on my Instagram account (maxwell_treks) give it a follow!
More to follow January 2018.
